Eyes

Angelique knew she’d have to decide soon. Her indecision was hurting both her efforts as a queen candidate and her relationship with Randy. Which was the most important?
They met in the park for lunch. It was a warm, sunny afternoon. She almost wished she didn’t have a lesson with Olivie later that afternoon.
“Angelique.” Randy’s voice was barely more than a whisper.
She looked up into his eyes, a blue that rivaled the color of the sky. As his eyes flickered closed and he lowered his mouth to hers, she made her choice. Yes, she still wanted to become queen. But she realized she wanted Randy more.

New Toy

“This had better work this time,” Zephel muttered. He made one more adjustment on the control, donned his goggles and prepared for takeoff.

Randy had just set the radio to a station that played mostly ballads.  Angelique smiled at his choice. He sat down on the grass next to her and put his arm around her.  She rested her head against his shoulder.
The music was replaced by static. Monique started barking, having been awakened from her nap by an awful noise. Randy and Angelique looked up to see Zephel soaring past in a flying device undoubtedly of his own creation. Unfortunately, it seemed to operate on the same wavelength as the radio station Randy had chosen.
Angelique shook her head. “Sometimes I think Zephel never thinks about anybody but himself. I know he didn’t interrupt our date on purpose, but. . .”
Randy smiled and kissed her forehead. “If he did, it’s just because he’s jealous that the prettiest, sweetest girl in the universe has fallen in love with me and not him.”
She started to blush. “Thank you.” The radio came back on and she snuggled closer to him. This was what was important. Being with the man she loved more than her own life.

Jealousy

“Angelique, what’s wrong?” Randy was puzzled by the girl’s sudden coolness toward him.
“I saw you coming out of Rosalia’s room.”
“I’m a guardian. It’s my duty to help the queen candidates.”
She walked away from him. “I think we ought to end this now.”
“End it? But we’ve barely started. There’s so much for both of us to learn about each other. . .” He could feel her withdrawing emotionally from him further. “Angelique, give me another chance. I know I shouldn’t have gone to her room, but nothing happened between us.”
                “Randy, I. . .” She choked back her tears.  “I. . .”
He grabbed her hand before she could run away.  “Please. . .” He brought her hand to his lips and placed a feather-light kiss on it. “Forgive me.”
She looked into his sky-blue eyes and could see his sincerity. She smiled and squeezed his hand. “I’m sorry I acted so silly. I trust you. But Rosalia is so -”
He placed a finger against her lips. “She has one fault I could never overlook.”
                “What?”
“She’s not you.” He pulled her into his arms and just held her.  He vowed to prove to her that she had no reason to be jealous of  the other queen candidate.
