Angelique stared at the books on her desk. Where to start?
She had no idea when she was chosen as a queen candidate that there would be so
much studying involved. Her choice was interrupted by a knock on her door.
She
opened the door to see Marcel standing outside.
“Is it
all right if I come in?” he asked hesitantly.
“Of
course.”
“Angelique,
I. . .” He looked everywhere but at her. “I want to be with you,” he blurted
out.
“Marcel,
I’m flattered but -” She couldn’t tell him that she’d started seeing
Randy. While she wasn’t attracted to him
in that way, she still didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
“I
know. But maybe, someday, your feelings will change.”
His
eyes made her think of a puppy lost in a rain storm. If he had been the one to
kiss her that night, would he be the one her thoughts turned to constantly? No.
While he was sweet and kind, he seemed more like a younger brother than
anything else.
“I’m
sorry. I hope you find the right girl. But I’m not her.” She squeezed his
shoulder and gave him a weak smile.
“I
know. I still wish. . .”
There
was another knock on her door. This time it was Randy.
He
frowned when he saw Marcel. “Am I interrupting something?”
“No. I
was just about to leave.” Marcel didn’t spare a glance for his friend as he
left.
Randy
turned to Angelique. “I feel like I missed something.”
“You
didn’t miss a thing.” She kissed his cheek. She wouldn’t tell him what Marcel
had said. The younger boy would get over her and she didn’t want to ruin the
friendship between him and Randy over something so silly. His awkward
confession would best be kept between the two of them.
