Confusion

Angelique’s meeting with Julious was still bothering her the next day. Maybe it would have been better if Randy had never kissed her, if they had never fallen in love. Then she could concentrate on her responsibilities as a queen candidate with no distractions. But. . . To have missed out on their relationship, even if she chose to end it, would have been unbearable.
If only someone could tell her what she should do. But she couldn’t think of anyone to ask. Which was more important? Randy or becoming queen?  Rosalia was smarter and probably more qualified to become queen. But she doubted that the other girl cared about the inhabitants of her continent. The people who lived there might just be a means to an end as far as Rosalia was concerned.
She sighed and pushed her books aside. She probably wouldn’t  remember anything in them even if she tried to read. Monique was sleeping on her bed, so the puppy didn’t need her right now. She opened her door and was relieved to see no one around. In spite of his assurances that he’d support whatever decision she made, she couldn’t face Randy right now.
Her luck didn’t hold for long. She turned a corner and saw him with Zephel and Marcel. Marcel saw her before his friends did.
“Randy, we’ll talk later,” Marcel said, dragging Zephel away with him.
Randy turned and smiled when he saw Angelique.
He walked over to her and put his hands on her shoulders. “You’re still bothered about yesterday, aren’t you?”
“I’m confused more than anything else. Maybe I just want too much.” Her eyes filled with tears. “I almost wish I wasn’t a queen candidate. But then I wouldn’t have met you.”
He brushed her tears away with his thumb. “We’ll find a way,” he whispered. “The thought of a world without you beside me is unbearable.”
He pulled her into his arms and gave her a kiss that showed her just how much she meant to him. “We’ll find a way,” he promised.
