The
rain poured down harder and harder, until visibility was reduced to nearly
zero.
“Now
what?” Angelique asked, shivering from the cold. The unexpected storm had
caught them unprepared.
“There
must be someplace we can take shelter until the storm is over,” Randy said. He
pulled her into his arms and tried to warm her up. “We’d better keep moving,”
he added. “We’ll never find shelter if we just stay here.”
She
nodded and took his hand. She was glad Monique hadn’t come with them. At least
the puppy was safe and warm at home.
A flash
of lightening gave a split second of illumination, but it was enough for Randy
to see a building of some kind not far away.
“Are
you up to running?” he asked. “There’s a building not far from here.”
She
gripped his hand more tightly. “Let’s go.”
They
managed to make it to the building in only a few minutes, in spite of almost
falling on the slippery, rain-soaked terrain. The building was a small cabin
that had definitely seen better days. There was a fireplace, but no wood. At
least the walls were secure and kept the rain out.
“You’d
be better off being stuck here with Oscar,” Randy said. “At least he, as the
guardian fire, probably would have been able to light a fire in the fireplace.”
“If I have to be stranded in a
rainstorm, you’re the only one I’d want to be stranded with.” She put her arms
around him and gave him a kiss that made them both oblivious to the cold
